Is Cabinet Refacing Worth It If the Layout Works? Paint vs Reface vs Replace

Cabinet door samples in a functional kitchen illustrating painting, refacing, and replacement decisions

Decision guide

If you like the layout and the boxes are sound, refacing can be worth it when the doors and style are the problem—not when you only need color.

Is refacing worth it if the layout works?

Often yes, when the boxes are sound and the doors are the problem. Color alone is a painting job.

The profile still works and you want a new color
Painting, most kitchens $3,500–$9,000
You need a Shaker or another new profile
Refacing, typically $5,000–$12,000
Skins or doors failed, and the boxes are still sound
Refacing
The boxes failed, or the layout has to move
Replacement, referred out
Soft-close or new hardware stacked on the scope
Soft-close $600–$1,200; hardware install $385–$850

ColorUp refers full replacement out. No public per-foot or per-door menu.

Paint (keep doors)

  • Style/profile still works
  • Want opaque color or sheen
  • Most kitchens $3,500–$9,000
OR

Reface (new doors)

  • Need Shaker or new profile
  • Skins/doors failed; boxes OK
  • Typical $5,000–$12,000

Is cabinet refacing worth it if the layout works?

Often yes—when boxes are dry and square, appliances and traffic flow still work, and the thing you dislike is door style, failed skins, or worn fronts. Refacing replaces doors and drawer fronts (and often visible panels) on the boxes you keep. It is usually leaner than full replacement and more structural than paint when profile must change.

When painting is the better “worth it”

If color and film quality are the only goals, painting is usually the higher-ROI path. Paint cannot turn raised-panel into Shaker—see cannot change door style and painting vs refacing.

When replacement wins instead

Failed boxes, major layout changes, and kitchens that need new carcass geometry are replacement territory. ColorUp refers full replacement out.

Planning money without unit menus

Refacing typically plans $5,000–$12,000. Painting most kitchens $3,500–$9,000. Soft-close and hardware can stack as scoped ($600–$1,200 soft-close; hardware install $385–$850). No $/LF or $/door public menus.

Frequently asked questions

Is refacing worth it if I like my layout?

Yes when boxes are sound and doors/style are the pain. Layout fit is exactly when refacing competes well against replacement.

Can I paint now and reface later?

Sometimes, but you may redo money. If style must change soon, decide once—see what service do I need.

Does ColorUp install full replacement?

No. We paint, stain, reface, modify, and coordinate countertops; full replacement is referred out.
