Substrate Guide

Yes—some laminate and melamine kitchens can take a professional painted finish when the skin is intact, edges are sound, and adhesion prep is honest. Chipped edges, swollen core, or confused thermofoil wraps need a different path. This is not a thermofoil clone and not a DIY bonding recipe.

CABINETS
Can this laminate be painted?
Some intact skins can take a finish. Condition decides, not the primer brand.
When paint qualifies, most full kitchens are $3,500–$9,000. Refacing plans $5,000–$12,000. $2,500 is a smaller standalone painting scope only.
Paint path
- Skin intact; edges firm
- Door profile still acceptable
- Want color change, not new doors
- Most kitchens $3,500–$9,000
Reface path
- Edges chipping or core soft
- Need a new door style
- Failed factory skin is widespread
- Planning $5,000–$12,000
Laminate vs thermofoil vs melamine
Homeowners often use these words interchangeably. Thermofoil is typically a vinyl wrap heated over shaped MDF—peel patterns differ from flat laminate or melamine panels. If your doors are peeling in sheets, start with peeling thermofoil: paint, reface, or replace rather than this laminate guide. Flat laminate/melamine with intact skins is the subject here.
When painting laminate can work
Painting is a candidate when cabinets are dry, doors are not delaminating at edges, and you accept that adhesion depends on thorough cleaning, mechanical keying, and a bonding strategy suited to slick factory skins. ColorUp evaluates that on site—there is no universal “always paints” claim for every laminate kitchen in Houston humidity.
MDF cores behind laminate are common. The core itself is not automatic disqualification; water-softened or swollen MDF is. Water history belongs on the water-damage guide before any finish conversation.
When painting is the wrong spend
- Edges already chipping or bubbling
- Previous DIY paint peeling off the slick skin
- You need a different door profile (paint keeps the profile)
- Boxes failed—paint will not rebuild carcasses
In those cases, refacing (new doors/drawer fronts on sound boxes) or a refer-out for full replacement is the honest path. See painting vs refacing and cabinet refacing service.
What a pro program changes on slick skins
Professionals do not treat laminate like raw wood. Expect aggressive degreasing, careful sanding or scuffing within limits of the skin, adhesion-promoting undercoats where specified, and a durable top system. ColorUp’s painted kitchens use Renner Italia (1K standard, 2K upgrade), high-build primer and topcoat, doors shop-finished in our production shop, boxes finished in place. That process still requires a substrate that can hold the film.
Planning ranges
When laminate qualifies for paint, planning mirrors other painting projects: most full kitchens $3,500–$9,000; usually from $3,500; $2,500 smaller standalone only. Refacing plans $5,000–$12,000. Linear-foot / scope method; no public $/door. Confirm current bands on /facts/ and cabinet painting cost.
No adhesion absolutism
Any contractor who guarantees every laminate kitchen without seeing edge condition is selling hope. Condition review first.
Houston kitchens and factory skins
Builder-grade laminate and melamine remain common in Greater Houston subdivisions. Many are sound enough for a professional paint program; some are already failing at sink edges or dishwasher returns. The right first question is condition, not brand of bonding primer. Bring clear photos of door edges, sink base interiors, and any prior paint layers to the estimate.

Frequently asked questions
What’s the difference between laminate and thermofoil?
Thermofoil is usually a heated vinyl wrap over profiled MDF; laminate/melamine is often a flatter factory skin. Peel behavior and repair options differ—identify before choosing paint.
If laminate is chipping at edges, can paint save it?
Usually not as a long-term save. Chipping edges signal skin or core failure; refacing or replacement is safer than burying the problem under film.
Do MDF cores change the decision?
Sound, dry MDF can support a paint path. Soft or swollen MDF does not.
When is refacing the better spend?
When skins are unreliable, edges fail, or you need a new door style while boxes remain solid.
Is this a DIY bonding-primer project?
Slick factory skins are unforgiving. ColorUp does not publish DIY catalyzed or bonding how-tos. Hire for kitchen-scale laminate when daily wear matters.
