Substrate guide
Yes—many MDF cabinet doors can be painted when edges are sound and prep is honest. ColorUp shop-sprays doors with Renner Italia. This page explains when MDF paints cleanly, when edges fail first, and when refacing is the better path. It is not a DIY sealing recipe.
Paintable when sound
Often the first failure
Shop-sprayed doors
Paint MDF doors
- Doors and boxes still square and dry
- Edges are intact or repairable
- You want color/finish, not a new profile
- Planning band usually $3,500–$9,000
Reface instead
- Swollen or crumbled edges
- Failed skins or delamination
- Door style must change
- Planning band typically $5,000–$12,000
Can you paint MDF cabinet doors?
Often yes. Medium-density fiberboard takes an opaque finish well when the substrate is dry, the faces are stable, and cut edges are sealed in the finishing process—not left raw to absorb Houston humidity. ColorUp evaluates doors in person; we do not publish a homeowner how-to for catalyzed spray.
What usually goes wrong on MDF
- Raw or poorly sealed edges swell first near sinks and dishwashers.
- Peeling skins or thermofoil wraps on MDF cores need a different decision tree—see paint, reface, or replace.
- Expecting paint to invent a new door style—it cannot; see painting cannot change door style.
How ColorUp finishes MDF doors
Doors are typically labeled, removed, and shop-sprayed with Renner Italia polyurethane (1K standard, optional 2K upgrade). Boxes stay on-site. Edge condition, repairs, and adhesion plan appear in the written proposal. ColorUp is a service-area business based in Kingwood, TX.
Planning ranges
Most kitchen painting lands $3,500–$9,000 (usually from $3,500; $2,500 smaller standalone only). Refacing, when doors must be replaced, typically $5,000–$12,000. No public $/door or $/LF menus—see cabinet painting cost.
Frequently asked questions
Can you paint MDF cabinet doors in Houston?
Yes when doors are sound and prep/adhesion allow. Humidity and moisture exposure make edge sealing and substrate honesty more important—not a reason to skip professional process.
Do MDF edges need special treatment?
Cut edges absorb moisture faster than faces. ColorUp addresses edges in the shop finish plan. We do not publish DIY sealing recipes.
Is laminate the same as MDF?
No. Laminate is a surface; MDF is a core. See painting laminate for the laminate path.
When should I reface instead of painting MDF?
When edges are swollen, skins have failed, or you need a new door profile. Painting cannot rebuild geometry.
What warranty applies?
ColorUp’s painting warranty is a 1-year limited warranty on a 1K paint system and a 3-year limited warranty on a 2K paint system. Compare terms in writing—see what to compare in a warranty.
