Planning Guide
By ColorUp Cabinets · Updated September 30, 2026 · Greater Houston
Yes—you can replace kitchen countertops without replacing cabinets when the boxes are level, sound, and worth keeping. Paint or reface the doors in the same project when the finish or profile no longer fits the new stone.
Sound boxes + layout you like
Most kitchens $3,500–$9,500
Planning $5,000–$12,000
When keeping cabinets works
New quartz, quartzite, or other stone on existing boxes is a common Houston refresh when the cabinet carcasses are dry, square enough for a stable template, and still match how you cook and store. Full cabinet replacement is a different project—and ColorUp refers that work out rather than installing new box systems.
Keeping boxes does not mean ignoring ugly doors. Many homeowners pair new tops with cabinet painting or refacing so the whole field reads as one decision. ColorUp can coordinate finish and stone under one written plan when that fit is right.
Condition checks before templating
- Boxes solid—no soft water damage at the sink or dishwasher. Soft substrate belongs on the water-damage scorecard first.
- Tops of boxes accept a level template; shimming and scribe are normal, major racking is not.
- Doors and drawer fronts either stay as-is, get painted, or get replaced through refacing—decide before you fall in love with a slab that fights the door color.
- Hardware and soft-close can update in the same window without a full remodel.
Paint, reface, or leave the finish
Leave the finish when color and sheen still work with the new stone. Paint when boxes and door profiles are fine but color is tired—most ColorUp painting projects plan $3,500–$9,500 (usually from $3,500; $2,500 smaller standalone only). Reface when you need a new door style or failed skins—planning $5,000–$12,000. Painting cannot invent a Shaker profile from raised panel; see painting cannot change door style.
Keep boxes + new tops
- Layout and storage stay familiar
- Less demolition and dust than a full gut
- Finish and stone can share one schedule
- Best when carcasses are sound
Full cabinet replacement
- Required when boxes fail or layout must change
- Different trade stack and budget band
- ColorUp refers this path out
- Not solved by thicker paint
Sequence
Whether paint happens before or after templating depends on protection, overhangs, and the written schedule. Use paint cabinets before or after new countertops for the decision tree. This page only needs one rule: do not template on unstable boxes, and do not assume stone alone hides a finish you already dislike.
Planning ranges (no stone $/sf)
Countertop pricing follows slab, edge, sink cutouts, and installation after templating—ColorUp does not publish public $/sf menus. Cabinet painting and refacing ranges above are planning bands from /facts/; linear-foot / scope quoting applies to cabinet work. Hardware install often plans roughly $385–$850 per kitchen depending on count and prep; soft-close full-kitchen upgrades often $600–$1,200. Final numbers live on the proposal.
ColorUp’s coordination role
When boxes qualify, ColorUp can align cabinet finish direction with slab selection, edge details, and sink cutout ownership in one proposal structure. That does not remove the need for a sound template or honest plumbing scope language. Homeowners still approve samples in real kitchen light before finish locks.
If you are early in research, start with box condition photos, a rough wish list for stone color, and whether door style must change. Those three answers prevent most false starts.
Frequently asked questions
Do cabinets need to be perfectly level for new stone?
They need to be stable and within what templating and installation can correct. Major racking or collapsed boxes are replace territory.
Should I paint before or after templating?
It depends on protection and overhangs. Use the dedicated sequence guide rather than a one-line absolute.
What if doors are dated but boxes are fine?
Paint for color; reface for style or failed skins. Tops can still land on the same boxes.
When is full cabinet replacement unavoidable?
When boxes are soft, swollen, out of square beyond repair, or the layout must change. ColorUp refers full replacement out.
Can one company handle finish and stone?
ColorUp can when the scope fits—see also the one-company coordination article when published. Accountability for sequence is the point.
