Material Guide

Quartz is engineered stone: predictable pattern, typically no sealing, use trivets for hot pans. Granite is natural stone: one-of-one character, sealing depends on the slab, generally better brief heat tolerance. Marble is the high-movement look that etches from acids and needs disciplined care. Quartzite belongs in the same conversation as a natural alternative with stronger heat tolerance than quartz — see the dedicated quartz vs quartzite guide. ColorUp quotes countertops on a written proposal after templating. This page does not publish $/sq ft bands or resale ROI percentages.

Porcelain slab is also in ColorUp’s planning library (thin printed surfaces; edge build-up matters). Dekton is a competitor sintered brand — not a ColorUp line. Browse directions: countertop catalog. Service overview: /services/countertops/.

Heat, stains, and daily use

Quartz’s convenience is the non-porous surface; its limit is resin binders under hot pans — always use a trivet. Granite generally tolerates brief hot-pan contact better; it can still stain if the sealer for that stone is neglected. Marble etches from lemon, vinegar, and wine — etching is not a wipe-away stain. Quartzite offers natural movement with stronger heat tolerance than quartz for many slabs, with sealing and variation as the tradeoff.

Houston humidity matters for neglected natural-stone care, but ColorUp does not set a universal “reseal every X months” schedule. Follow the care sheet delivered at project handoff.

How ColorUp prices stone (no unit menu)

Per /facts/: countertop fabrication (installed) is quoted on the written proposal after templating. Drivers include material family and variation, how many slabs the layout forces, seam plan, edge profile, cutouts, splash path, removal/disposal, plumbing-if-scoped, and site access. Generally, quartz is often on the lower end; exotic quartzite and marble higher. Granite is slab-specific. Full driver framework: what drives countertop cost in Houston.

Written proposal after templating

Photos help direction. The firm stone total waits on layout, slab approval, and template — not a blog average.

Pairing with painted cabinets

Busy stone wants quieter cabinet color; quiet fields let Renner sheen lead. Bring sample doors to the yard. Guides: plan color and counters together, busy countertop. Cabinet painting planning: most kitchens $3,500–$9,000. Sequence and one-company coordination: paint before or after, one company, keep cabinets.

Seams on multi-piece kitchens are planned to be as discreet as slab, layout, and material allow — never promised invisible: seam planning.

Where quartzite fits

If your real question is “quartzite sounds like quartz — what’s the difference?”, use quartz vs quartzite for painted kitchens. If you are stuck on the classic shop debate “quartz or granite?”, start with the material compare table and the questions below. Porcelain path: porcelain vs quartz.

Frequently asked questions

Is quartz or granite better for a Houston kitchen?

Depends on sealing tolerance, heat habits, and whether you want a repeatable pattern or a tagged natural slab. There is no single Houston default.

How much do quartz countertops cost installed in Houston?

ColorUp does not publish $/sq ft. Countertops are quoted on the written proposal after templating. Early talks cover material direction and drivers.

Does granite need to be sealed every year in Houston?

Sealing depends on the stone and the care sheet — not a universal calendar invented on this page.

Can you put hot pans on quartz?

Use trivets. Resin binders can be damaged by direct high heat.

Which material has the best resale value?

ColorUp does not publish ROI or recoup percentages. Choose for use and design; buyers notice coordinated kitchens more than a family label alone.

Are decorative edges more expensive?

Edge profile is a qualitative cost driver on the proposal — not a public $/lf menu.

Is quartz fake stone?

It is engineered stone — minerals bound with resin. That is a product class, not an insult. Pattern control is the point.

Does granite etch like marble?

Generally no. Granite still can stain if neglected; do not oversell “never stains.”

Can I switch from granite to quartz after template?

Material change can reset slab, template use, and schedule. Confirm in writing — no invented day count.
